Catinhat mentioned they can't get "energy effient" bulbs to work in cold areas.  Porch, places like that.

I've got the same issue.  For instance, I have several different floresent fixtures in the garage.  A couple old 4' bulb fixtures and a couple long U shaped bulb fixtures.  Some start right away and others flicker a while before they come on.  I have seen some newer, cheap 4' fixtures that won't light at all in cold temps.  I know it has a lot to do with the ballast in the fixture, as to how it works with temp extremes.

Have used screw in floresent bulbs in some places.  They light right away, but don't give out much light.  I'm spoiled enough that I like areas to be "sunshine" bright………

Need some guidance from an electrical / lighting expert……………..

I see the need for a "how to / what to" use article from someone who knows…………..

On the cheap, of course……….

(hint, hint — nudge, nudge)      crying

Thanks

God Luck there.  Seems as soon as it is labeled energy efficent the price goes WAY up.  I can remember as a teenage making lights out of LED's at that time we only had red ones to chose from but they were cheap.  We used to hook them up to 9volt batteries and then go spelunking with them.  Not sure why a LED light bulb should be $40+

I bought 8 curly bulbs and have the first one in the hall light.  Son had to use a ladder.   Suppose to put out 60W of light for about .50 a bulb.   So far only have one in and I do have to see by it just get down the hall.  Only one light has gone out here so far.  MY lamps I changed bulbs as reg ones.  Those curly bulbs have been so high.   I thought it would save him replacing my bulbs a lot.

I will not put them out side  then.  I light front and back of house.  They are on some type timer.  Go off in day time.  If they do not work in cold sure would not be a place for them to be used.  I will try to remember that.

And that 5 year is only if you use so many hours per day.  Not ones you leave on.    I have one bulb that runs on up to 130 and heavier eleimant to last longer. Bought way back.   That might be okay.  I do not leave on all night.  I have switch I can shut them off.  But if I go off in daylight and switch it will have light on when I get back in the dark.

Reg bulbs last longer in cold places.
